Sir Douglas Mawson

English born he moved to Australia in 1884. He joined an expedition headed by British Explorer Ernest Shackleton's in 1909 in the Nimrod. He was the first to reach the magnetic South pole. He was the only survivor of the journey. Mawson headed more voyages to the Antarctic in 1929 and 1934 concentrating on marine biology.

 

Mawson Place on the waterfront in Hobart has been named in his honour. 

One can visit the replica of Mawson hut on the water front opposite Mawson pavillion.
