Roald Amundsen

A Norwegian explorer of the polar regions who led the expedition in 1911 -12 which reached the South Pole on the 14th December 1911. This was three weeks ahead of the British Explorer Robert Scott. He announced his results on the 8th March 1912 by sending a telegram to the king of Norway from the General Post Office Hobart. The news finally reached Hobart's public three days later when Amundsen became a local celebrity.

Amundsen anchored his vessel the "Fram" in the Derwent off Long Point, Sandy Bay. He stayed at Hadley's hotel. He and his fellow expeditioners attended a special service on 17th March 1912 to welcome his polar party. He prayed for the polar party led by Robert Scott who was long overdue from his return from the South Pole.
